Safeguard Crime Report – June 2025

by Safeguard | jul 09, 2025 | Incident reports

OVERVIEW

  • A total of 81 crime incidents were recorded in June 2025, marking an 11% decrease from May 2025 and a 5% rise compared to the same period last year. The incidents reported in June 2025
primarily comprised violent crime, suspicious activities, and theft of unsecured valuables.
  •  Violent crime accounted for approximately 23% of reported cases, reflecting a notable decrease
from 35% the previous month. Among these, five daylight robberies were recorded, with
perpetrators frequently fleeing with large sums of money. In one incident at around 12:30hrs in
Killarney, Bulawayo, intruders disarmed a private security guard, restrained him, and stole money
from a safe before fleeing on foot.
  •  Residential properties accounted for 23% of incidents, with cases of armed robbery and targeted thefts reported at these sites. In The Grange, Harare, intruders forced entry during dinner, threatened the family, and stole money before fleeing upon the arrival of the response team whose swift response prevented further losses.
  • Numerous reports were received from Harare and Mutare of intruders targeting critical
infrastructure, specifically ZESA transformers and telephone cables. These incidents disrupted
power supply, leaving premises without backup power to sustain security systems particularly
    vulnerable to intrusion.
  • Vehicle thefts increased markedly, with five cases reported in a single day in Harare and
Mashonaland West. Majority of these incidents resulted from negligence or carelessness,
particularly where motorists left vehicles unlocked or keys in the ignition, creating easy
    opportunities for perpetrators.
  • Over the past month there were reports of intruders directly confronting caretakers on-sites, highlighting the need to protect key personnel who often have access to sensitive areas.
  • Most successful incidents occurred where one or more security measures were absent, inoperative, or compromised. The presence of alert security personnel, supported by functional
alarm systems and other protective measures, remains vital in deterring crime and limiting losses.
  • Safeguard security personnel reported multiple instances of suspicious activity. These proactive reports reflect commendable vigilance and have played a key role in the early detection of potential threats.

Note: The incidents and statistics we report are those that we have verified. This report is a good indicator of crime across the country but by no means captures all incidents. OUTLOOK

Although overall crime decreased slightly from the previous month, incidents of violent crime, suspicious activities, and theft of unsecured valuables remain prevalent. Residential properties and critical infrastructure continue to be targeted, with robberies and vandalism causing significant concern. The rise in vehicle thefts, linked to security lapses, highlights the need for vigilant security measures. We forecast continued challenges in violent and property crimes, emphasizing the importance for residents and businesses to maintain heightened awareness and strengthen security protocols to mitigate ongoing risks amid persistent threats.

ADVISORY

  • It remains our long-standing advice that cash, machinery, and other high value assets stored on site must be comprehensively secured at all times to prevent theft. Our fogging systems deliver a
proven, final line of defense that instantly incapacitates intruders and safeguards assets, especially cash from loss. Fogging system stops thieves in their tracks. – Safeguard Security Zimbabwe.
  • If a caretaker is residing on-site, an alarm system must be installed at their residence to ensure early detection, as intruders often confront caretakers and forcibly demand keys to sensitive areas.
  • Where possible, alarm systems must be armed fully or partially when at home and supported by reliable backup connections. The Safeguard App | Safeguard Security Zimbabwe or AJAX system allows users to easily arm and disarm their alarms and to report faults promptly. Should you require any assistance do not hesitate to contact us.
  • Staff and security personnel should strictly enforce access control protocols, allowing entry only upon verified prior appointment or approval. Under no circumstances should confidential and
sensitive information be disclosed to unauthorized individuals.
  • Multiple layers of security should be implemented where possible as they provide continued protection if one layer is breached and enhance the overall effectiveness of incident response.
  • Strong perimeter fencing coupled with reliable lighting that is ideally solar-powered is essential to safeguard property. Routine inspections must be conducted to ensure these critical defenses are fully functional, providing effective detection and deterrence against security threats.
  • Always answer calls from your security service provider. Failure to respond can delay response times and jeopardize safety.
  • All important records and surveillance footage should be regularly backed up offsite or in the cloud for investigation support.
  • Motorists must exercise heightened vigilance by locking their vehicles at all times and never leaving keys in the ignition, even momentarily.
