Safeguard Crime Report – May 2025

by Safeguard | jun 11, 2025 | Incident reports

OVERVIEW

  • A total of 90 crime incidents were recorded in May 2025, marking an 11% increase from April 2025 and a 23% rise compared to the same period last year. This rise was primarily driven by suspicious activities, violent crimes, and counterfeit currency fraud, notably at fuel stations.
  • Violent crime comprised approximately 35% of reported cases, predominantly occurring in recreational and public spaces. Multiple armed robberies and assaults were reported, including three separate machete attacks in Emakhandeni, Bulawayo within a single evening.
  • Residential properties accounted for 18% of incidents, with notable reports of robberies and targeted intrusions. Reported cases include a high-value robbery involving cash, diamonds, and a safe in Chisipite, Harare and a burglary in Madokero which resulted in loss of over US$250,000.
  • Mount Pleasant and surrounding areas experienced targeted thefts affecting water infrastructure, solar equipment, and generator components. In another incident at Mount Pleasant a vehicle was intercepted by two SUVs carrying armed suspects. A pursuit ensued during which private security guards exchanged gunfire with the suspects. The robbers subsequently abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, evading arrest despite a thorough search.
  • A significant escalation in fuel theft from commercial premises was observed in Msasa, highlighting persistent vulnerabilities to critical infrastructure.
  • Criminal activity peaked between midnight and 04:00 hours. A notable number of incidents were also reported before midnight, likely due to the extended hours of darkness during the winter season.
  • Most successful incidents exploited deficiencies such as lack of on-site security, insufficient perimeter protection, and poorly positioned alarm sensors, resulting in delayed responses and significant losses.
  • Four fire incidents linked to alternative energy sources were reported in Bulawayo, including a gas cylinder explosion that destroyed a vehicle and solar battery fires that caused total loss of residential property.

OUTLOOK

The current upward trend in crime shows no indication of subsiding in the near future. As violent incidents continue to escalate across various locations, it is crucial for residents and business owners to prioritize their safety. With the onset of winter and shorter daylight hours, heightened vigilance is essential to mitigate risks and ensure personal safety during periods of reduced visibility. Moreover, increased attentiveness around fuel storage sites and public areas is vital to address the growing threats of theft and violent crime.
